Bridle Road
Brief
An old bungalow with a long garden in Croydon, South London, was stacked with potential. Purchased by a small developer, we were engaged to explore what could be achieved on the site to maximise its potential. With a number of good local schools in the area, there was demand for family housing within the borough. This was a key catalyst to the developed scheme.

Our sketch designs lead us to develop a solution in which the existing bungalow was demolished and replaced by two 3-bedroom semi-detached units at the front with a third bedroom housed within the loft space. At the rear of the site, the old garage structure was replaced by a 2-bedroom bungalow. By reducing the density of the development, all three units are provided with private amenity space. It also allowed us to maintain the massing and characteristics of the existing street-scape.
Initial pre-application discussions with the Local Authority led to the development of an elevation which was sympathetic in its materiality but modern and contemporary in its application. The upper floor is clad in a buff red brick. A soldier course banding separates this from the terracotta-coloured render which anchors the lower floor. The rear dormer and entrance canopy are clad in a copper-coloured standing seam metal cladding.
