Orchard Grove

Brief

The project involved extending a 1930s family home situated within the green belt. As the family dynamic evolved, the clients needed additional bedroom space for their elderly parents to move in while ensuring they could maintain their independence and privacy. The existing conservatory at the rear had become underutilised, suffering from overheating during the summer months. Additionally, the garage, much like many today, had transformed into a storage space as it was too small to park a modern car.

  • Our initial step was to create additional living space within the main house by relocating the garage to a separate stand-alone building. This move freed up the existing garage area to be transformed into a self-contained unit with its own level access from the side. We aimed to ensure that this extension did not merely feel like an addition to the main house; instead, we designed it with a unique character, featuring a vaulted oak-framed gable form. The full height glazing at the gable end allows for a bright, airy living and dining space that maintains a strong connection to the garden.

To harmonise the new extension with the existing home, we demolished the old glass conservatory and replaced it with a fully insulated space. The oak-framed glazing and bifold doors create a seamless transition between the existing structure and the new extension, resulting in a balanced and cohesive elevation.
