Bayleys Cottage
Brief
This project involved the development of a replacement dwelling on the site of an old, dilapidated bungalow in Farnham, Surrey. While the existing properties on the street are predominantly double-storey homes, our clients valued the charm of the original bungalow and sought to preserve some of its qualities in a modern design that meets their spatial requirements.

We drew inspiration from the old property and the characteristics of the neighbouring houses along the street. The use of a gambrel roof allowed us to maintain a bungalow-like scale while providing ample head height on the first floor. Dormer windows strategically punctuate the upper levels, flooding the bedrooms with natural light. A boxy covered front porch introduces a contemporary touch to an otherwise traditionally styled home.
The ground floor is clad in long-format buff yellow brickwork, accented with a double soldier course detail above the openings. Timber-clad flat-roof dormers break through the roofline, adding a modern twist to the traditional form. This contemporary aspect is further emphasised by wrapping the entire upper floor in timber, creating a cohesive and monolithic roofscape that unifies the design.
